Signed, Stamped, Delivered

Oh my goodness, I am completely enthralled with mail lately. As I recently posted, I've been looking for pen pals and have since sent about 25 letters and about 15 postcards so far. I can't stop! And I'm always looking for new people to correspond with. It's so addicting! My desk is filled with envelops, postcards, stationary, postage stamps (for domestic and international) and my rubber stamp collection is ever growing.  It's now a daily occurrence to have little surprises in my mail box. This is so much fun!! If you've never done this or are thinking about, jump right in! There's so much to know and learn about other people and cultures all over the world. I just joined this awesome website postcrossing.com. You can request to send postcards and it will give you a random user with their mailing address and an ID to write on the postcard. Once they get your card they will register the ID number to show it's been received and then you'll be the next random person to get a card. Loves it! I just sent mine off about two days ago. Two to Russia, two to China and one to Italy.
I just bought this box of postcards called Ocean's Sweaty Face from McSweeney's and they are badass!
Some of my favorites. Still unused! The Aquafresh Hot Dog by Brian McMullen deserves a frame. I've spent most of my morning buying unused vintage postcards on eBay. I can't wait to get these little gems in the mail!!!

Haha! I love the "risque" ones. I'm such a perv.

Photo Spotlight: Brooke Shaden

"Rebirth"
A friend of mine mentioned how she was heading to Dallas to model in a workshop for "the one and only" Brooke Shaden. Of course I had to check out her work and I'm so glad I did! It left me speechless. Too bad for me this was during one of my random 3AM wake ups and I spent the next 2 hours mesmerized by her dreamlike imagery. I was actually kind of hoping they would give me beautiful and stunning nightmares.

"Imagination Island"

"Emergence and Disturbances"

"The Path of Lost Souls"

"The Research Laboratory"

"The World Above"

"Rise and Fall"
"The Sharing Game"

"The Inconvenience of Spirits"

"My Little Bluejay"
"A Story in Older Terms", self portrait

As you can tell, it was really hard for me to only pick a few favorites. I am in love with her work. This might be caused by my love of sewing but the fabric in these photos is incredible! I always wonder if the photographer directs their models for such stunning poses or if they just do as they please. I was really surprised to learn that most of these are self portraits. Please check out her website for her full gallery. Her sold out workshops sounds like an absolute dream. She provides the location, models and props along with breakfast and lunch. All you have to do is bring your camera and a tripod. One of the locations was an abandoned hospital in LA. I'm so intrigued by her creations. It makes me want to go home and spend all day on Photoshop. Thank you for the inspiration, Mrs. Shaden.

Ride the Butterfly

Check out Leah Nobel's brand new music video "Ride the Butterfly". Hair and makeup by me. :) I had so much fun on this shoot. Especially hanging out with Miss Leah. She is hilarious and as cute as a button. I'm so happy I got to be a part of her first music video. This girl is incredibly talented. The video looks gorgeous! Many many props to the director/cinematographer and my friend, Eduardo Garcia. We worked previously together on Please Hang Up and Try Again.

Kari, Carrie, Kari and Mary

Hello lady babies! I cannot wait for this afternoon. It's my Friday and I have a fun filled weekend ahead of me. It's SXSW's last week and I'm gonna brave the chaos tomorrow. I'm meeting with my dear Kari right after work for a much needed hair cut. Maybe a new color...Tomorrow morning, I'm gonna hang with my girl Carrie who's visiting from NC. We're gonna get some Noble Pig breakfast, then mani pedis and thrift shopping. Then more Kari action! We're taking the Metro Rail downtown to enjoy the festivities. The only band I've heard of on the free show lineup is the Flaming Lips. They'll be at Auditorium Shores. That would be amazing!! I hope we catch them. You can check out my post from last year's festivities here. I had a great time. If only Ben Kweller was having another free show tomorrow... I'll be sure to take pictures and share the good times with everyone. Let me know if you're in town!

My favorite pictures from last year.

On Saturday, my sweet Mary is coming over for some sewing. She is way more skilled in this area so I'm really looking forword to some new pointers. We're finally gonna check out the Craftsy classes I bought on Cyber Monday last year. I'm finally gonna brave knits! Wish me luck.

Where, oh where has my dealer gone?

James and I went out for sushi last night at this place we haven't been to in awhile. For some reason, they took forever to serve raw food and I remembered something about that place.

"Hey babe, remember when I used to meet my makeup dealer in this parking lot?"
"Haha! Yeah, whatever happened to her?"
"Hell if I know. She probably got bumped off."

WTH is going on in this picture? A wad of hundies for a nasty ass lunch bag?

Yes, I really had a makeup dealer. I had it bad, guys. This was before I became a makeup artist. I had just started getting into makeup and I was a serious makeup junkie. It really was like a drug to me. I would shop for makeup constantly. My habit was getting pretty expensive so I started looking for the cheaper stuff. I boldly went where no one should ever go for makeup; Craigslist. I'm almost ashamed to admit it. I saw a post that said they were selling name brand cosmetics at ridiculously low prices. I wasted no time. I sent an email and set up a time to meet with this random makeup dealer near my place. I asked James to drive me to a dark parking lot and he parked beside the car. Thankfully, it was a woman. I don't even remember her name anymore. I was careful not to make a big scene of getting out of the car and into her's. I was afraid a cop would see us and think it was a legitimate drug deal.
This chick had all kinds of goodies! MAC brushes, Chanel eye shadow palettes and a ton of Benefit. I carefully inspected everything to make sure it was legit, most of it looked pretty good. She was like "Whatchu want gurl? I got all kindsa shit" I was in way over my head. I looked at everything for way too long and finally decided on getting Hoola from Benefit and a really nice Chanel palette for my sister's birthday. God, that palette was gorgeous! I ended up calling her about a week later. "Hey, can you meet up with me? I'm going through withdrawals. I need it bad!" So we met again, this time I let James stay home. This was when I noticed something was off with the product. It was the Dr. Feelgood Lipscription from Benefit (it has since been discontinued). It came with two tubes. One was a lip exfoliator and the other was a balm. The issue was that they products were in the wrong tubes. The balm was in the exfoliator and the vice versa. Where the hell is this chick getting this stuff? I was too afraid to ask questions. I just paid for the stuff and went back home. That was the last time I saw her. I emailed her and texted her a couple of times. Nothing.

One year old today!

I'm a proud mama today. My baby bloggy woggy is one year old today!!! It feels good.

I didn't really know what I was getting into when I started Nestled in Nostalgia. I just wanted a way to document the things that I do and love. Obviously, I'm very nostalgic and I thought this would be more fun than keeping a journal or update after update of ignored Facebook posts. It feels like I've really accomplished something. Having a creative outlet that is so public is very liberating. I don't hold back here. It's kind of weird but I was reluctant to even share this link with people I know. I still am. I even blurted it out to James' mother at the most opportune time; right after her anesthesia dose before surgery. She was super groggy and about to fall asleep. "So what's new guys?" Um... I have a blog! "Really? I didn't know that. What's it called?" Nestled in Nostalgia. "What?" NESTLED IN NOSTALGIA. "Oh... cool..." and she was out. She hasn't mentioned it since so I think she forgot. Bwahahhaha! I really didn't want her to know my dirty little secrets, plus she's a professional writer and I didn't want to embarrass myself. Haha!

Thank you all so much for your continued support. I have the best followers and blogger friends! You've made this such a great year.

Cinemanic Monday: "Why can't we start old and get younger?"

Oh, John Hughes. You really did a number on this movie. I love love love Pretty in Pink. Especially the Duck Man. He was so cute!!! I would have given anything to have "one of these" in high school. What did Andie mean by that comment anyway? "Have you ever had one of these?" Poor poor Duckie.

He had great shoes too.

The cutest thing I've ever seen in a movie, ever.

I never understood why Andie and Blaine even liked each other. They were obviously attracted to each other but that's about it. They didn't even know each other. He was sooo boring! Plus, he kind of had the crazy eyes. Throughout the entire movie. His name should have said it all. If I were Hughes, I would have just kept his real name. Andrew McCarthy. That's a great name! Blaine and Andie just weren't meant to  be. They were both so stuck on "making this work" "maybe it wasn't meant to be". I don't know. It was weird. He probably dumped her after prom.

image

Then there was Steff. Steff was hot. Really hot. He obviously liked Andie but was an asshole about it and that got him nowhere. Way to fuck with Blaine though! That was very much Kathryn via Cruel Intentions. You're just a toy, Blaine. A little toy Steff likes to play with.
Hmm... so what's a girl to do? Whom should she have picked? If it were up to me I would have thrown caution to the wind and had a big ol' lesbian crush on
Iona.

I actually do have a real crush on Annie Potts. She was amazing!!! God, I loved her. Her clothes, her hair. She was sexy. You were right to replace Andie, Duckie. Iona was all woman. I don't know about Andie, but I would have jumped ship long before the timeline of this movie. I'd worship this girl and all the records and loose staples she walked on. Andie should have asked her to prom. She was practically begging for it when she put the dress on and made Andie relive it with her.

If all this wasn't reason enough, Andie said it perfectly. "You're going to OD on nostalgia."

Now, that's my kind of lady.
