Cinemanic Monday: "Don't you got tits? Stick 'em out, for God's sake!"

I just got Role Models in the mail. A book written by John Waters. I'm really enjoying it so far! I heard about it from a fellow blogger and decided to buy it for myself as a bday present. I also watched (the new) 21 Jump Street this past weekend (fucking hilarious!) so naturally I wanted to pay some homage to Waters and Depp. Cry-Baby (1990) is another classic from John Waters. In search of Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker, Waters bought $30 worth of  teen magazines, all of which featured Depp on the cover. In search of a not-so-teeny-boppery role, Depp accepted.
I think of this movie as every Rockabilly's bible and John Waters is God. I've seen this movie countless times but I like it much better with the commentary on. I love hearing about how his movies come about, why he made them, how he made them and everything in between. Plus, he's always hilarious.
I read Traci Lords autobiography Underneath It All and she dedicates a few chapters to Cry-Baby (her first non-porn/non-shitty movie). She talks about being so nervous the first day of filming, she threw up her Cheerios and how unbelievably sexy Johnny Depp was upon meeting him. The way she put it, I'm pretty sure he was trying to get her in bed but she was taken at the time. I'm sure she immediately regretted her decline because not long after her insane boyfriend showed up on set all "Where my bitch?!" style. The feds came looking for her too... poor thing. This was not long after the world found out she was a teenage porn star. And not the "barely legal" kind but the Oh shit this is extremely illegal kind. On the bright side, she met her first husband on the set! I can't remember his name but he's the son of casting director Pat Moran. One of Waters' Dreamlanders.

Traci in a giant champagne glass (deleted scene). I actually know a girl who does a burlesque-style, giant-champagne-glass show in Austin. Come to think of it, she looks a lot like Traci...
I love this scene. I don't really care of that actress (Amy Locane) because she came off as stuck up on the special features interview. She did mention that Johnny Depp was her official first kiss. Lucky girl. That had to be so awkward though. She was rolling around on John Waters living room floor, making out with Johnny Depp in front of her mother and the entire cast.
Speaking of mother's. In the commentary John Waters mentions that while filming, he found out Kim Webb's (Lenora) real mother was a kickass lady drape he grew up with in Baltimore. Isn't that ironic? Don't you think?
Wet dream maker since 1984
This movie just oozes sex appeal
And then there was Hatchet-Face...

  2. Mandy!!! I love love love watching movies with the commentary on. It's about the only reason anyone needs a physical copy of any film these days. I remember you were going to show me this movie one day and we didn't get around to it. Still have never seen it.

    Love you
